So after obliging me with a mini photo-shoot, the signore in the pink cap takes off. I walk up and down hills to another part of town.

Note the wrist and waist decor.

I find a house dripping with flowers–some real, some plastic. I start poking around, trying to separate reality from illusion. It’s still early morning; the light is gold.

Out steps a man from a doorway. That manStill in his pink cap.

Ciao, he says. Do you like this building? Yes? Wanna have a look inside?

I hesitate for a split second then follow him in.

The first room is dark, lit only by an enormous psychedelic fish tank–a swirl of purple lights and brilliant tropical creatures. A few chairs line one wall.

Salla d’attesa, he says. Waiting room.

Waiting for what, in God’s name?

We enter another room. It is festooned with masses of plastic red roses, vines dangling from the vaulted ceiling and curling over the walls.

In the center of the room stands an examination table.

A stethoscope hangs from a hook.

“Are you a doctor?”

“Sí, internal medicine.”

I try to hide my surprise. ”You’re an interesting man!” is about all I can muster.

Then I’m back on the street, regretting that I haven’t even asked his name.

Flowers on their Toes in Sicily

July 11, 2011

Italians–those wily sorcerers–know how to prettify everything. Cocoa hearts on their coffees, flowers on their prettily painted toes.

“You have the ugliest feet I’ve ever seen,” a good friend once commented.

Since then I pretty much refuse to wear sandals in public.

So you can imagine how jealous I am of Italian feet.

The sandal style this year often has a Greek thing going on at the ankle and a sexy flower at the toes. And, damn it, your toenails better match.

Sicily, and a Story of Spines

June 20, 2011

Direct from Italia! Coming soon to Peoria.

Dresses that showcase the back and plunge to the booty.

My husband commented that this blue number made him want to pour a cold drink down the valley of her spine and watch it trickle inside the wide rim of the dress.

I guess you never know what weird male fantasies a pretty dress will trigger.

Strumpet Bride? Bella Figura?

April 2, 2011

A shop window in small-town Sicily: bridal mini-gown.

Che pensi? Whaddya think?

The height of chic? The depths of kitsch?

Would you wear it?

One thing’s for sure. Conservative old Sicily is on the march.

Studs and Plum Duds: Bella Figura in Sicily

January 26, 2011

More fashion for you, folks, straight from the bars and streets of southern Sicily.

Fat “diamond” ear studs for a barista:

And may I point out the heart-stopping eyebrows? And beaded necklace (to match the shirt)? Fantastico, no, how the Sicilian male adores adorns himself?

Studs all over the map.

The full spectrum of purple–plum, wild lilac, dusty grape, violet sky, sangria, raspberry syrup, aubergine–is still very much in vogue (click here for a purple post from last summer). Also note, below, her super-chic wide-as-a-yardstick spectacle arms.

Since purple is the *in* color, a purple puffy is cool, too (in addition to the black and white ones I mentioned in an earlier post.)

Bella Figura in Sicily, copyright Jann HuizengaThe only fashion faux-pas committed by the lass in purple is her nasty plastic bag. But this is about to change, as Italy has just banned it, though word of the new legislation has not yet trickled down to the mini-markets of Sicily.

And below, the short trench, much alla moda.
