“What are you doing, Mister?” Β (She wonders.)
Me too.
Not being quite as shy as she, I stick the camera in Tarzan’s face: “What are you doing, Mister (Signore)?”
“Digging forΒ *+*&^%$#.”
I do not understand the word, and ask if he is looking for clams.
No, it is something else, though a bivalve of some sort (he shows me one).Β “For lunch,” he adds.
Sicilians are always foraging in the fields for something to eat, so why should it be any different at the beach?
This boy is on the hunt for crabs.Β How many do you need for pasta with crab?

Such an entertaining story about Signor Battaglia and his family! The meal you shared at the end of the tale reminds me a little of when my sister and I cooked up and shared a supper of cabbage rolls that my father had prepared and left in the freezer some time before he passed away.
How aptly you named “Tarzan”; at first I had thought it must be Fabio, but clearly I was mistaken.
Ah, thank you for going to that link & reading the story, Lynne. Glad you liked it. How bittersweet about eating the food your father had prepared… (Now that you say it, the guy does bring Fabio to mind!!)
yes, you’re a wonderful Jane..
π
The only foraging where I live is called “dumpster diving”. What you see in Sicily is far more wholesome and healthy.
Ah, yes, Sam–the famous NYC dumpster diving… that can be fun, too!
Just look at those colours Jann! I love this post. You are right on the money. Years ago in Melbourne the only foragers on the beach at sundown where the old Italians looking for clams…. Now everyone’s a gourmet! Keep having a great summer! Jxx
I want to learn all the tricks of foraging from Sicilians. Someday I hope to survive solely on what I forage! π
Tarzan so funny π makes me wish to be in Italy at the beach and out of the city! Soon holidays in Puglia and cannot wait!
Carla x
I bet the beaches in Puglia are wonderful. Have fun, Carla!
what a fisherman!
great Jann, great picture, nice moment captured…
Tarzan taken..what about Jane??
un abbraccio
Lucia
π
Can I be Jane? (My name is close enough, and Sicilians often call me “Jane.”) Un abbraccio back to you, Lucia.
I wish I could have been there to take the photo of him looking at your stunning slender blonde self taking a photo of him…he looks quite “taken.” Beyond the weather and setting, there is always the poignancy of human interaction. Even the little girl covers her breasts in an innate sense of being in the presence of a potent man. Ah, the untold stories!
Aysha, :). You made me laugh. Yes, I loved the little girl covering herself up…and the man is smiling patiently and politely as he would do to a friend of his mother’s.
Aren’t these the same crabs called moleche in the waters of the Venice lagoon?
Hi there Ronald, welcome to the blog! I do believe you are right about that. Can anyone confirm??
Nice photos Jann. Glad to see you are at the beach…you’re getting “warmer” with the types of photos I want to see. Next time you run into a “Tarzan” please ask him to stand up for the camera shot…ha ha.. By the way, how is the economy in Sicily these days?
Ciao Charlie–everyone in Sicily is complaining about the economy, of course, and I’ve spoken to many young people who cannot find work–a continual problem in Sicily. There are more houses and businesses for sale. Sicilians invest in “mattone,” which means in bricks–houses, etc, so many are trying to sell off extra properties. My particular town has cut back bus service, for instance, and a few other services. Otherwise problems with the economy are not so readily visible, at least in this area (one of the richest in Sicily).
—How wonderful it must be to be “Beautiful With Camera!!”
For example, you can ask Tarzan if you can take his photo.
B R I L L I A N T.
MANY Kisses from Minnesota, Jane ( I mean, Jann. Haaaa
Ah, Kim, if only. Though the “with camera” part is correct. Kisses back to Minnesota.
It’s all so soothing to the eyes. I am hoping to see the beach when I visit Sicily in October. I hope you are capturing as much of the summer as you can!
Bonnie–you picked a great month to visit. October is my favorite–all the olive picking, etc. Since this summer is so hot, the sea may still be warm enough for swimming then.
How refreshing your beach looks, Jann! Perfect place to go, to beat the summer heat!
Ciao Debbie! So many areas of Sicily are ON FIRE now so water is looking especially good.
Well I’m not sure which is lovelier, Tarzan or the beach… π Ahh, I’m too old (and perhaps too tired!?) for the Tarzan’s of the world, but I’ll take that beautiful beach any day!
Lovely pictures Jann, I especially love the endnote of the yellow bucket in the sand….
Hope your summer is going well and you are surviving the heat waves there…
Hi Cathy, never to old to look at a Tarzan. I’m barely surviving the heat wave here, but it’s abating tomorrow they say. How are is your virtual tour of Italy going???
Oh yes.. as I always say, “A poor man can still look through the catalogue.”
My virtual tour sort of stalled thru the winter months since I was plagued with every cold and flu germ that passed within 1000 feet of me it seemed. So although I’ve kept up with regular yoga classes since the spring, I haven’t really put much effort into much else.. But I will start tracking again, since I celebrated the 25th anniversary of my 29th birthday yesterday it seems as good a time as any for new beginnings and to resume my “journey”!!
We’ve had very warm weather here also, I’m grateful for our pool… but it cannot possibly compare to the heat of Sicily I’m sure!
Cathy, happy birthday!!! (I love how you put the number.) Midlife is a great time for a second blooming. Go for it!!!!
Jann, I love the composition in these shots! That beach quite resembles the lovely beach here! Are you also soaking up the summer sun? I hope you’re enjoying the summer, my friend! π
Bella, I trust you’re enjoying Spain! I think we have the same warm temps. I stay pretty much OUT of the sun, myself. Except when I dash out of the shade for a moment or two to photograph. π
